In the competitive arena of professional tennis, a technological duel is taking place between an established leader and a rising contender. Hawk-Eye, a British company that has been at the forefront of ball-tracking technology, is well-known for its video simulations that resolve disputed line calls at major tennis tournaments. These simulations, generated by tracking cameras that determine the ball's trajectory and landing spot, have become a staple for tennis fans globally.

However, the Spanish start-up FoxTenn is challenging this dominance, claiming it can eliminate any ambiguity in the line-call process. While Hawk-Eye admits to a margin of error of approximately three millimeters in its simulations, FoxTenn asserts that its real-time technology provides absolute accuracy. "We offer the technology of truth and transparency, capturing the actual impact of the ball on the court," stated FoxTenn president Javier Simon.

FoxTenn utilizes around 40 cameras, along with scanners and lasers, to capture the precise moment the ball hits the court, thereby removing the need for simulation. This method has received a zero-error rating in a study endorsed by major tennis organizations, including the ATP, ITF, and WTA. Currently, about 30 men's and women's tournaments, accounting for roughly 20% of the professional circuit, have adopted the FoxTenn system.

Advocating for Broader Adoption

FoxTenn is striving to broaden its reach, particularly at the prestigious Masters 1000 events and the four Grand Slam tournaments. With line-call contracts at the nine Masters events nearing expiration, the company is actively lobbying to showcase its capabilities. The Marseille Open, which has already implemented FoxTenn, initially faced some challenges but has seen improvements over two seasons. "Initially, I was intrigued by the idea of a competitor to Hawk-Eye," said tournament director Jean-Francois Caujolle. "FoxTenn seemed easier to install, slightly more cost-effective, and provided real-time images, which is beneficial."

Players, who are often focused on their performance, typically do not engage with the technical details of line-calling. Tennis icon Roger Federer admitted he was unaware of FoxTenn's presence, while French player Gael Monfils recognized his familiarity with Hawk-Eye but noted FoxTenn's potential advantage in displaying the ball's actual landing spot.

Future Prospects in Tennis Technology

As the battle for technological supremacy in tennis line-calling intensifies, the future of these systems will likely depend on their ability to deliver precision and reliability. FoxTenn's real-time approach offers a compelling alternative to traditional methods, potentially setting a new standard for accuracy in the sport. Meanwhile, Hawk-Eye's established reputation and widespread use present a formidable challenge for any newcomer.
