Event Information

Trimontium is the name of a Roman fort at Newstead near Melrose, Scottish Borders (close to the 3 Eildons). Trimontium (Tri - 3, montium - hills) was occupied by the Romans intermittently from 80 to 211AD.  The fort was likely abandoned from 100-105AD until 140AD. At the height of the Roman occupation of the fort, no more than1500 soldiers and a smaller civilian population lived in the settlement.

There are stories and rumours abound that not all Roman soldiers have left the settlement area and have been hiding in the forest near the River Tweed and the hills so the challenge has been set for you to run very close to the fort then down by the River Tweed before checking the 3 Eildons for any remaining soldiers before returning to Melrose to receive your reward!

For this race taking place in March you will be running in the opposite direction to all previous years - clockwise.  So starting at the same point - the bottom of Boglie Road - you will then be directed towards the River Tweed first before taking on the 3 Eildons at the end - don't forget to lift your head at the top of the Eildons for some spectacular 360 degree views of the Scottish Borders -  then continuing on a new route to finish just outside Melrose Rugby Club. A total distance of 11 miles.

The only water station will be in the conservation village of Bowden which is just around the halfway point. Around 70% of the route is trail with mud a distinct possibility and an outside chance of snow on the peaks. Please choose your footwear carefully and wear warm clothing for this race.

Kit List
Compulsory - Waterproof jacket/top

Advisory - Wooly hat or similar, map, whistle, energy bar/gel, drink, mobile phone

This race will be marked with correx signs, arrows and marshals.

*We plan to hold the 3 Eildons Trail Race in the usual anticlockwise direction towards the end of August. This is good training for any runner entering the Jed Ultra Race which is held at the end of October every year, as this route takes in the middle part of that race.

As usual, registration will take place at the Melrose Rugby Club where hot showers and a free buffet of traybakes, cakes and hot drinks etc. will take place after the event for all those who conquer the Trimontium XI.

NOTE: Your name on the entry list confirms your entry to the race.

Please also note the start time of 10.30am with registration taking place 9am -10am followed by an important briefing at the 10am at the Rugby Club before walking to the start line.

Entrants are kindly reminded that this is a running event not a walking event and that a generous time limit of 3 hours has been set.  We will have a number of volunteer marshals plus the Borders Search and Rescue Unit waiting for you until you are safely off the Eildons.

Very limited parking is available at the Rugby Club but there is plenty of street parking available and a free car park in St. Dunstan's Park less than a 2 minute walk away. Please park sensibly.

Proceeds from this event will be donated to Borders Search and Rescue Unit and Sick Kids Edinburgh.

Prizes will be given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd Male and Female runners. All finishers will receive a momento at the finish line.

This race is not a certified distance.
